Stonington Free Library’s 2 phases of construction are complete and the furniture package is also complete!
The Main Level’s architecture changed with the Architect, Stephen Dewey, RA of dewright design removing the stair, adding a new entry way with ADA lavatories on both levels and an Elevator only with a new exterior ramp. The new interiors have the colors from the logo when possible and a soft neutral which freshens things up without making a dramatic change in aesthesis. We wanted the space to have the same cozy, historic gem of a library type feeling that it always had. But we also want fresh updated look and I believe we have achieved that. I hope the patrons will walk in and say wow this is very open, sunny, fresh and feel happy to have this space to utilize. In the back (stack area) we used a Stepping Stack type of design. We went up high in the back and stepped down with mobile shelves. This opened up the space and makes you notice the historic window design and the skylight again. The Main Room has almost double the book stack space giving us the leeway to use the “Stepping Stack Design”. I love that the right side (ramp side) has all new stacks with custom colored paint and the left side we reused the stacks formerly on the right and just gave them a new coat of paint. The carpenter from the past project was able to create new shelving in the gaps and made it look perfect. Recycle and Reuse are such a big part of Library Design. No one wants to through good stuff out!
The Main Level did receive most of the attention in this renovation however Micayla and Marist thought the Children’s Area needed some TLC in the stacking area. The stacking area has a bright and cheerful blue end panels and canopy tops. We used fixed and mobile stacks in this area. We also have a new and improved children’s computer area and some soft seating for reading. We matched the new furniture with the recently purchased furniture and we blended the furniture so well that it looks like it is all new.
Marist, The Children’s Director also has new furniture in her office that can serve two staff. She has plenty of storage with new desking & cabinetry. The lower level also now has a staff kitchenette which was a long time staff request.
So many changes including a New Director for this Gem! Congratulations Micayla hall on your new position. Happy Retirement to the former Director Belinda deKay.
Wonderful things are happening at this beautiful Library.
